A Guide to Displaying Discount Popups
In the dynamic world of e-commerce, discounts play a crucial role in attracting and retaining customers. Shopify, a leading e-commerce platform, empowers businesses to create and manage discounts to enhance their sales strategies. One effective way to showcase these discounts is through Discount POPs (Pop-ups), which catch the attention of visitors and encourage them to make a purchase. In this article, we'll delve into the intricacies of Discount POPs and their integration with your Shopify stores.

Creating Discounts and the Role of Discount POPs
Creating discounts in Shopify is a straightforward process. You design these discounts within your Shopify store, specifying the criteria for applicability, such as products, collections, or order amounts. (Click here if you would like to know how to create discounts in Shopify.)
Discount pops are pulled from the code you create in your Shopify admin dashboard. Once you create these codes, you can head to Rules and Settings > Discount Pops> Edit Rules and Design. Here you will see the option to create a new discount pop. Head to the drop-down menu and search for the Shopify discount you created in your store's backend
Exploring Available Discount Types
Shopify offers a range of discount types, each catering to different marketing strategies. These discount types include:
-
Amount off Product: Discounts only on the product
-
Buy X Get Y: Customers get a free item (Y) upon purchasing a specified quantity (X) of another item.
-
Free Shipping: Shipping costs are waived for eligible orders.
-
Amount off order: Discounts an entire order
Displaying Discounts in your store
Discount POPs are strategically designed to appear where the discounts are applicable. The corresponding Discount POP will be displayed on the respective product or collection pages if you've set up a discount for specific products or collections. This ensures that customers are immediately informed about the available discounts when they are most likely to engage with them.
Understanding the Absence of Customer Segmentations
You might wonder why customer segmentations are not supported within the context of Discount POPs. This limitation stems from data privacy concerns, particularly in relation to GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) compliance. Shopify does not share customer data on the store page if the customer is not logged in. As a result, the application cannot determine the customer segment to display personalized discounts. This is a deliberate measure to protect customer privacy and adhere to data protection regulations.
Displaying Multiple Discounts
How does POP! determine the order if multiple discounts are available?
Imagine a scenario where multiple discounts are applicable to a single product. In such cases, Discount POPs operate on a first-come-first-serve basis. The first matching discount that applies to a specific product will be displayed. This emphasizes the importance of strategizing your discount naming and prioritization to ensure that the most relevant discount is showcased.
Automatic Discount Updates Unsupported
Unfortunately, we cannot support automatic discount updates/deletions after changes on the Shopify side due to the following reasons:
-
Shopify doesn't have WebHooks for Discount updates/deletions so we cannot determine immediate changes.
-
Even if we are able to do it we are unable to automatically change text to the correct one after the discount type changes from automatic to code.
